Interview with Thierry Mugler
This is the original english text of the interview with Thierry Mugler:

Dear Mr. Mugler,

first of all we would like to thank you for the opportunity to have an interview with you. This isn’t the common interview that you might know, as www.splashcomics.de is one of the most popular comicsites in Germany. And of course we concentrate a bit more on the comic-facts.

Q :After A*Men you are going to bring B*Men to the market, the second perfume which is based on a comic-book character, created by yourself. What came first? The idea for the comic-book character, or the idea for the perfume?

Actually, A.Men was already inspired by the comic-book character with the Silver Surfer for the A.Men adversiting in 1999. At the beginning I even hesitated to keep the original Silver surfer drawing. In the end I chose the photograph for all the technical possibilities. When I thought about a new male fragrance I immediately wanted to come back to the comic universe. I wanted a second hero, A.Men’s alter ego. So the idea of the new man fragrance came first, and then B.Men  was evident.

Q : A*Men has been released in 1997. What was the reason for letting pass seven years for the “Sequel”?

A.Men was my first male fragrance. We were well-known in the female fragrance with Angel. It took time to be accepted in the men’s range. Then to get the right B.Men fragrance we needed two years work on it.

Q : Did you already plan in 1997 to make this second perfume?

No, as I said, I knew that some day I would feel like doing an another male fragrance but I really did not think about an other hero.

Q : Is there any chance, that we will see more comic-books of A*- and B*Men?

As indicated on the back of Terra Elastika, everything leads one to believe that it is just the first in a series of adventures. Within the company, everyone is already impatiently looking forward to developing a second installment in the saga of our two heroes.

Q : First A*Men, now B*Men, is there any chance that we will see C*Men or D*Men or even A*Women in the near future?

Currently no. It seems too easy and not surprising enough.

Q : Fashion and comics don’t usually mix together. How did you fashion-colleagues react on the release of A*Men, and what was the reaction of the comic-book industry?

I do not agree with you, there are many comic characters who inspired fashion shows( and if you look back at some of my collections, we had such references on numerous occasions). But I don’t know the reaction of either fashion world or comic book industry. Comics, like film, theatre, architecture, etc., is a frequently used artistic reference in the world of fashion. However I understand that some designers may not admit that, since they consider that comics is a “lower” art…

Q : Did the comic-book industry offer you to make a regular series out of A*Men? And if they would, what would be your answer?

I am not a publisher of comic books. Terra Elastika was just a nod in the direction of the comic books I used to read when I was a little boy. For the comic book I worked with Beb Deum who is a real artist from the comic book world. I would not do it by myself.

Q : To stay on the issue of connections between fashion and comic-books: If you would design a collection for comic-book fans, how would it look like, how would it be inspired?

Neo from Matrix & Catwoman, for instance. We would definitely have a combination of male super heroes, and a variety of female characters ranging from the super glamorous femme fatale type to the wonderwoman/catwoman type.

Q.:Did you read any comic-books in your childhood? And if yes, which did you prefer the most?

The Silver Surfer was my favorite one. I also read Timour, the cave man, Tarzan, the animal man. I read a lot of Flash Gordon, Blake and Mortimer.
I liked also the characters of Lady X, the fatal spy, Olrik or Miloch, Torpido…

Q : Do you still read comic-books? And if yes, which ones?

I don’t know so much about novelties in comics as I used to… Actually, I have come to a stage where I use my culture (film culture, image culture, comics culture) in some of my work. I suppose have a good illustration of this in the Zumanity show that I have staged for the Cirque du Soleil…

Q : Super-Heroes are very popular nowadays, especially because of feature-films like X-Men, Spider-Man or Hulk. Did you have the time to go to the cinema and see these films? If yes, how did you like these films?

I go to the movies very often. Living in New York, it is hard to miss any new release. I am not always enthused by film adaptations of comic book heroes, but some directors have done nice things. In the past few years, the film industry has revived almost every comics possible into films… The special effects are always impressive, but the script can sometime be weak.

Q : Which super-heroe would you like to see in the cinema?

The Silver Surfer, definitively!

Q : If you had the chance to redesign a costume of a super-heroe, would you do it and which one would you like to redesign? (If you want to, you can send us a drawing with this question.)

Of course! In the last months, I designed all the costumes of the new Cirque du Soleil show : Zumanity. And I really enjoyed it.
So if I had to choose one I would like to design … Well, that is tricky! I wouldn’t know, there are so many super-heroes & heroins to choose from.

Q : Let’s return to the perfumes. There are many men, who know perfumes only as shaving lotions. Do you see any chance to get them as customers? And what would be your strategy?

There used to be this cliché that men could simply not be interested in fragrances; hence the excuse of the morning “after-shave” lotion, which has more to do with hygiene and well-being than with actual perfume. I now invite them to be transported into  another world, a supernatural universe. What made the success (or part of it) of our female fragrances is the imaginary world around it. I think the best strategy would be to offer men an equivalently efficient imaginary wolrd to delevop their olfactory sensibility.
