Interview with David Boller and Mary Hildebrandt | |||||||||||
Bernd Glassetter, Editor in Chief of Splashpages, held an interview with David Boller and Mary Hildebrandt. Their manga Evergrey, published by Tokyopop is going to be released November 2006 in Germany. David talked to us about his amazing journey to the USA, his reasons for leaving Switzerland and his experiences thus far. He had self-published fanzines in Switzerland for many years and through the knowledge he had gained, chose to follow his childhood dream of working with the major comic book publishers in the USA. While attending The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, David wasted no time in pursuing his goal and went straight to Marvel, leaving their headquarters with a major book project the very same day. This lead to continuous work from the largest mainstream publishers such as DC Comics, Acclaim, Top Cow, Lucas Films and many others. While working for these giants, David also continued working on his independent comic book Kaos Moon, published by Caliber Comics. Mary Hildebrandt is the daugther of renowned Fantasy/Sci-Fi illustrator Greg Hildebrandt. Half of the Brothers Hildebrandt team, the twins worked on larger than life projects such as Lord of The Rings and Star Wars. Tim Hildebrandt, Mary's uncle, was one of David Bollers teachers at the Joe Kubert school. At the time Mary shared the same studio with her father and uncle, occasionally assisting Tim at the school. He introduced Mary and David and finding that they both shared many common interests, like Osamu Tezuka's Kimba, the White Lion a deeper connection soon followed. Mary having type one diabetes since childhood had lost the function of her kidneys. Her body was dying and while she was on dialysis, David turned out to be a perfect match for a kidney transplant. Without any hesitation he donated one of his kidneys, saving Mary's life. A romantic story of love and great sacrifice. Having the support of Joachim Kaps and the staff at Tokyopop Germany made Evergrey a true work of love. This beautiful story is shared by both David and Mary in the interview. This is a really intriguing interview, well worth listening to. It runs for about half an hour and if you know German, you might also want to check out our Evergrey Special in the Dossier section. |
