Balkan Comics and Wars as seen by Aleksandar Zograf (english)

The Serbian comic artist Aleksandar Zograf (Psychonaut, Bulletins from Serbia) isn't really known in Germany. That is a pity and unusual because his works offer something nice for the eyes as well as for the brain. Next to the wars and turmoils on the balkans one of his main fields of interest are dreams and the images we see in the fleeting state between being asleep and awake. He has a lot of fans especially in the US and in Italy, among them big names like Chris Ware or Robert Crumb. He colloberates with both of them, for example we meet Crumbs Mr. Natural as an old bum on the streets of Belgrade. Zografs publications with Fantagraphics, one of the most important Independent publishers in the US, have been the first comics by european artists there.

In his "Bulletins from Serbia" Aleksandar Zograf gives an impression on how Serbian civilians experience the NATO bombings of their country - or, in a later issue, he shares his views on the death of Slobodan Milosevic. Another one of his works brings together a nearly forgotten account from the 1930s - in beetween the Nazi attacs and the allied counter-attacs - with a scripture from the middle ages.

Due to the conditions of illumination we unfortunately can't present you a video of the talk. But afterwards Aleksandar Zograf generously agreed to a spontaneus and exclusive interview. You can find the link to the video below.
